Information about GPS collars, dog collars
GPS collars are used to track wildlife with the GPS satellites. The term GPS means Global Positioning System.
The principel is that an animal is fitted out with a GPS collar. GPS GSM collars are a special version of GPS collars.
The principle of the mechanism a GPS collar works with is:
The position of the collared animal is estimated by the GPS engine inside the GPS collar. GPS fix location data is stored on board of the GPS receiver.
Modern GPS tracking collars are able to send such GPS position data “from the animal” directly to a receiving station. There are differnt possibilities of such a remote fix data transmission.
Via VHF or UHF cummunication link,
via satellite communication,
or via the GSM.
A receiving station can be a stationary receiver (f.ex. a GSM groundstation), a cell phone, a handheld
gadget (handsets) or a laptop.
GPS collars display the conventional VHF telemetry. The first time a GPS collar was used in wildlife telemetry, was 1994. Since that time, the
technology is raising very fast.
In the mean time, beneath position data (fix data) of tracked animals, also activtiy data of animals movement are stored and send via UHF
communication link to a receiver.
Lost dogs can be tracked by their owner via GPS Handy and a GPS dog collar.
